(Makes 3 dozen cookies)

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/3 cup margarine, softened
1/3 cup crunchy peanut butter
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1-1/4 teaspoons Sweet'N Low
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons chopped, unsalted peanuts

In small bowl, mix flour and baking powder. In large bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat margarine, peanut butter, sugar and Sweet'N Low until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture and peanuts. On waxed paper, shape dough into a roll about 1 x 9-1/2 inches. Dough will be slightly sticky. Wrap in waxed paper; refrigerate until firm, about 4 hours.

Preheat oven to 375F. With sharp knife, mark dough at 1/4-inch intervals, then slice; place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. If necessary, reshape cookies gently with fingers. Bake 6 to 8 minutes or until lightly browned on bottom. Immediately remove cookies to wire rack; cool.

Per serving (2 cookies): 114 calories, 3g protein, 11g carbohydrate, 7g fat, 1g saturated fat, 12mg cholesterol, 72mg sodium.

NEW YORK -- Unless a last-minute buyer steps forward, General Motors Co.'s Hummer brand is fading into history.
The sale of the SUV brand with military roots to a Chinese heavy equipment maker has collapsed. GM said it would still hear offers for the company, but potential investors would have to move fast.
"In the early phases of the wind-down, we'll entertain offers and determine their viability, but that will have to happen in pretty short order," said GM spokesman Nick Richards.
GM said Wednesday that its bid to sell Hummer to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co. fell through. The Chinese manufacturer said it failed to get clearance from regulators in Beijing within the proposed timeframe for the sale.
GM will continue to honor warranties for current Hummer owners.
"We are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed," said John Smith, GM vice president of corporate planning and alliances. "GM will now work closely with Hummer employees, dealers and suppliers to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner."
GM did not disclose a timeframe for winding down the brand, which employs 3,000 people in the U.S. Hummer will be the second division after Saturn that GM failed to sell as planned. Its one successful sale was Swedish car brand Saab, which is going to Dutch carmaker Spyker Cars NV in a $74 million deal.
That sale came together at the last minute after a deal with a group led by another Swedish car manufacturer fell apart. A similar outcome for Hummer would be its only hope of survival, but no new buyers had emerged as of Wednesday evening, Richards said.
The deal's backers in China had been racing to save the acquisition this week. As recently as Tuesday, private investors were trying to set up an offshore entity in a last-minute effort to complete the deal ahead of a Feb. 28 deadline.
That scheme, along with other plans that investors were considering, was unsuccessful, according to a person close to the situation. The person declined to be identified in order to speak more freely.
"There's no way forward with that," this person said. "We're out of time."
Tengzhong said it was disappointed with the deal's collapse.

Creating a battery from a lemon is a common project in many science text books. Successfully creating one of these devices is not easy. Batteries consist of two different metals suspended in an acidic solution. Copper and Zinc work well as the metals and the citric acid content of a lemon will provide the acidic solution. Batteries like this will not be able to run a motor or energize most light bulbs. It is possible to produce a dim glow from an LED.

The lemon battery is called a voltaic battery, which changes chemical energy into electrical energy.

The battery is made up of two different metals (the zinc nail and the copper penny). These are called electrodes, which are the parts of a battery where electric current enters or leaves the battery. The electrodes are placed in a liquid containing an electrolyte, which is a solution that can conduct electricity.

In a solution of water and an electrolyte, like the acid in the lemon, an excess of electrons collects on one end of the electrodes. At the same time, electrons are lost from the other electrode.

Touching the electrodes to your tongue closes the circuit and allows an small electric current to flow. A single lemon produces about 7/10 of a volt of electricity. If you connected two lemons together, you can power an inexpensive digital watch (uses about 1.5 volts). (Use a length of thin, flexible wire to connect the silver wire of one lemon to the copper wire of the other lemon. Then attach thin wires from the other two wires in the lemons to where a battery's positive and negative poles connect to power the watch.)

The tingle felt in your tongue and the metallic taste is due to the movement of electrons through the saliva on your tongue.

The picture at the top of this page shows a basic lemon battery: a lemon, copper penny and zinc coated nail.

The lemon: A large, fresh, "juicy" lemon works best. The nail: Galvanized nails are coated in zinc. I used a 2" galvanized common nail. The penny: Any copper coin will work. (Canadian pennies from 1960 - 2001 all worked)

Creating the battery: Insert a penny into a cut on one side of the lemon. Push a galvanized nail into the other side of the lemon. The nail and penny must not touch.

This is a single cell of a battery. The zinc nail and the copper penny are called electrodes. The lemon juice is called electrolyte. All batteries have a "+" and "-" terminal. Electric current is a flow of atomic particles called electrons. Certain materials , called conductors, allow electrons to flow through them. Most metals (copper, iron) are good conductors of electricity. Electrons will flow from the "-" electrode of a battery, through a conductor, towards the "+" electrode of a battery. Volts (voltage) is a measure of the force moving the electrons. (High voltage is dangerous!)

I have connected a volt meter to our single cell lemon battery. The meter tells us this lemon battery is creating a voltage of 0.906 volts. Unfortunately this battery will not produce enough current (flowing electrons) to light a bulb.

To solve this problem we can combine battery cells to create higher voltages. Building more lemon batteries and connecting them with a metal wire from "+" to "-" adds the voltage from each cell.

The two lemon batteries above, combine to produce a voltage of 1.788 volts. This combination still does not create enough current to light a small bulb. Note the red wire connecting the batteries is joined from "+" (penny) to "-" (galvanized nail).

Four lemon batteries create a voltage of 3.50 volts. We should be able to light up a small device like an LED (Light Emitting Diode). Note the connecting wires go from "+" to "-" on each battery.

To turn on an LED you must determine the "+" and "-" connections. If you look closely at the red plastic base of an LED you will notice a "flat" spot (indicated by arrow above). The wire that comes out beside the flat spot must connect to the "-" side of a battery, the other wire to the "+" side.

Important information about LEDs: LEDs are designed to work at very low voltages (~ 2V) and low currents. They will be damaged if connected to batteries rated at over 2 volts. LEDs require resistors to control current when used with batteries rated at over 2 volts. Lemon batteries produce low current. It is OK to connect an LED to a lemon battery.

In the above image, electrons flow from the "-" (nail) end of our lemon battery through the LED (making it glow) then back to the "+" (penny) end of the battery. This is an electronic circuit. The LED glows dimly with this configuration.

Improving your battery. The quality of the copper and zinc can be a problem for a battery like this. Pennies in particular are rarely pure copper. Try substituting a length of 14 gauge copper wire (common house wire) for the penny. Experiment with different lengths and configurations of electrodes. Other sources of zinc and copper may be found in the plumbing supply department of a hardware store.

Been cleaning out my house and editing my decade over the past few weeks...
Unearthed this cassette from high school days and transferred both sides to mp3 in two installments for you. Being that the source is a 15 year old cassette, the quality isn't exactly crystal clear but it being a little fuzzy is kind of part of the charm of listening to cassette in the first place. Side B sort of melts after about 38 minutes but...like I said, 15 year old cassette.

DJ Venom is a Providence-based legend. My first ever experience in going to clubs and hearing House music were at his all-ages Sunday School party at the space formerly known as Club Babyhead and various other parties and events he threw in the Providence and surrounding New England area in the mid-90's. I'd kill to still have any of his other mixtapes in tact, especially his epic house mixes. This tape was from the earliest days of Jungle coming into fashion stateside. I guess before it morphed into "Drum & Bass" and the parties got all scary thugged out. Anyway, it's pretty dope. This dude taught me a lot!

Recently on an overnight tour date to Our Nation's Capital I had the divine pleasure of sharing a hotel room with my soul-sister, NYC's premiere fashion icon and the Future Face of Nightlife, Ladyfag. After the gig we slithered back to the hotel where Lady immediately peeled off her thong thing and slipped into something more comfortable. In the first season finale "Exodus, Part 2" Hurley sees the Numbers engraved on the hatch of the Swan. In the second season episode "Adrift" it was revealed that the Numbers are the code that must be entered into the computer in the Swan every 108 minutes (4+8+15+16+23+42=108). Entering the Numbers resets the countdown timer to 108 minutes. If the operator doesn't push the button in time, the counter flips to a series of hieroglyphs; during this time it's still possible to finish typing in the Numbers, press execute, and return the counter to 108 minutes. The crew in the Swan were supposed to be replaced every 540 days (108 x 5), which means that each crew would enter the Numbers at least 7200 times. In the fourth season episode "Confirmed Dead", a television news anchor reports that although the remains of Oceanic Flight 815 had been found, all 324 passengers and crew had been confirmed dead (108 x 3=324).

I stumbled across this great relic from 1991 via a Facebook status update from Mother Juan Aviance who was looking for an obscuro version of "(Work This) Pussy" produced by Alcatraz (née Jean-Philippe Aviance) under the pseudonym Go, Bitch Go! I went on a hunt because, really...if there's a version of a bitch track I don't know about, I'm on that shit like lightning fast. Couldn't seem to track down an mp3 of that track in its entirety but what I did find was a continuous mix by Sasha and Laurent Garnier incorporating it into a whole hour of british rave and house classics back in the day when they were still fresh. Full of minor glitches, vinyl blips and certainly passed around like a game of Telephone, this recording is a beautifully eroded time capsule and an essential addition to any house-head's audio library.

How Do I Do A TSE?

Today was the debut of my dear friend Gerlan Marcel's fantastic new line of optimistic sportswear for men and women, GERLAN JEANS. Gerlan, alumni of London's Central Saint Martins, is the founder of Prints Please, NYC's most cutting edge textile design firm. In the past, Gerlan has been responsible for designing many of Jeremy Scott's most iconic graphics.

The salon-style presentation was held at the Bowery home of mega-über stylist Patricia Field. Pat had all her furniture removed! Also, there's a runway plank you have to walk down just to get into the main part of the apartment. Models were asked to be "Fierce n' Cute!" and ordered to wink and kiss at the camera. This fall, expect to see everyone buying their New Era hats in multiples of 4 for stacking them on all at once. I totally want the sunglasses wrapped in human hair! Afterward, everyone on the sidewalk agreed that it was the highlight of their fashion week and basically their entire lives.

GO GERLAN! SO PROUD OF YOU!!!
